FAQs

Whether you're completely new to Aikido or an experienced practitioner looking for a club in West Cumbria, you may have a few questions before getting started. We've answered some of the most common questions about Aikido classes in St Bees, our training, instructors, membership and what to expect from your first visit.

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei). It focuses on movement, balance, timing and positioning rather than relying on strength or aggression. Training includes empty-handed techniques as well as traditional weapons practice with the wooden sword and staff.

Is Aikido suitable for beginners?

Yes. Beginners are very welcome at West Cumbria Aikido and you don't need any previous martial arts experience. Your first three classes are free, giving you the opportunity to experience Aikido and decide whether it is right for you.

Where are Aikido classes held?

West Cumbria Aikido trains at St Bees School on Wood Lane in St Bees, West Cumbria, CA27 0DS. The club is conveniently located for people travelling from across West Cumbria, including Whitehaven, Workington, Egremont, Cleator Moor and surrounding areas.

When are the Aikido classes?

Our regular training takes place on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

When are the Aikido classes?

Our regular training takes place on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Monday sessions focus on Tai Jutsu (empty-handed Aikido), while Tuesday and Thursday sessions include weapons training.

Please check our training page for the latest class times before attending.

Do I need to be fit or strong to practise Aikido?

No. Aikido does not depend on physical strength or athletic ability. Training develops movement, balance, coordination and awareness over time. Beginners can work at a pace that is appropriate for their own ability.

As with any physical activity, please tell your instructor about any injuries or physical limitations before training.

What age do I need to be to practise Aikido?

West Cumbria Aikido welcomes practitioners aged 16 and over.

What should I wear to my first Aikido class?

You don't need to buy a special uniform for your first class. Comfortable, reasonably robust clothing such as jogging bottoms and a T-shirt or sweatshirt is suitable.

Aikido is practised barefoot on the training mat, although footwear should be worn when walking around off the mat.

If you decide to continue training, you can purchase a traditional karate or judo-gi.

Do I need to buy a uniform or equipment?

No. You don't need to purchase anything before your first class.

The club has spare wooden swords (bokken) and staffs (jo) available for new members to use during weapons training. If you continue with Aikido, the instructors can advise you on suitable equipment and where to obtain it.

What happens during an Aikido class?

Classes normally begin with preparation and warm-up exercises before the instructor demonstrates techniques and explains the principles involved.

Students then practise with a partner, taking turns to perform techniques and learn how to safely receive them. Classes may include empty-handed techniques, weapons training and exercises designed to develop movement and coordination.

Is Aikido competitive?

No. Aikido is a non-competitive martial art. There are no competitions or tournaments at West Cumbria Aikido.

Training involves working with other students rather than competing against them, allowing everyone to develop their technique and understanding together.

Is Aikido a form of self-defence?

Aikido is a martial art and its techniques are based on responding to attacks through movement, positioning and control. However, our training focuses on learning and developing the principles and techniques of Aikido rather than presenting it as a self-defence course.

What is Takemusu Aikido?

Takemusu Aikido is the traditional form of Aikido practised at West Cumbria Aikido. It follows the technical tradition passed down from O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba through the late Morihiro Saito Sensei.

Particular emphasis is placed on strong fundamentals and the relationship between empty-handed techniques and traditional weapons training.

Do you practise with weapons?

Yes. Weapons training is an important part of our approach to Takemusu Aikido.

We practise with the bokken (wooden sword) and jo (wooden staff). New members can use club equipment while they are deciding whether to continue training.

What are my first three classes like?
